Travertine paving: benefits and points to consider
Travertine creates a warm, natural setting, but the finish and care routine deserve deliberate choices. Consider its character alongside the practical requirements.
Natural variation
Pores, changing patterns and differences in tone are part of the stone. Open-pore and filled surfaces look and behave differently. View several slabs or a larger sample so you know the variation to expect.
Sun, frost and slip performance
A pale colour can be useful in a sunny setting, but it does not guarantee a permanently cool surface. Assess frost and slip performance using the relevant product information. The cited report dated 12 October 2023 concerns a particular Light sample, not every variety or finish.
Maintenance
As a limestone, travertine needs compatible cleaners and should not be exposed to unsuitable acids. Impregnation may make cleaning easier but does not eliminate every stain or all maintenance. Deal with spills promptly.
Rectangles or a French pattern
Rectangular slabs create regular rows. A French pattern, also called a Roman pattern, mixes four sizes. Compare both on your actual plan and coordinate the chosen appearance with the base and joint design.
