Laying travertine in a French pattern: sizes and joints

A French pattern, also known as a Roman pattern, combines four sizes in a repeating module. Agree the supplied dimensions, laying diagram and joints with your installer before ordering.

Four sizes in one module

The 3 cm thick travertine set discussed here contains 20.3 × 20.3, 40.6 × 20.3, 40.6 × 40.6 and 61 × 40.6 cm pieces. Use the diagram for the actual set being supplied. A generic illustration does not replace its component schedule.

A varied but coherent surface

Changes in tone and pores are distributed across the paving. Alternating sizes reduces long continuous lines. On a large patio the module creates rhythm; in a small courtyard it can soften the impression of a rigid grid. Check the effect on your own plan, including edge cuts.

Subtle joints are still joints

Joint width must accommodate dimensional tolerances and the installation system. A photograph of an almost continuous surface is not an instruction to butt the slabs together. Jointing material must suit the whole build-up. A close colour match lets the stone lead, while a contrasting joint emphasises the pattern.

Working with the diagram

Labels 1–4 identify the formats and starting module. Dry-lay the pieces to understand the sequence, then follow the agreed plan. Calculate waste from actual perimeter cuts. The pattern can suit contemporary or Mediterranean gardens; poolside use still needs its own technical checks.
