Laying natural-stone paving: the stages to plan
A guide explains the sequence of work; it cannot specify a universal base. Drainage, installation method and slab size must suit your site.
Set levels and drainage first
Before excavation, establish the levels at the house, steps and surrounding ground, and decide where surface water will go. The fall must suit the finish and site conditions. A lasting patio begins with these connections being properly designed.
Prepare the supporting layers
Excavation depth and the load-bearing layer depend on the ground, frost conditions and loads. Specify the material and compaction as part of the chosen system. The bedding material and thickness must suit the slabs and installation method.
Choose a complete installation system
Unbound aggregate bedding and a bound mortar system have different requirements. Bedding and jointing must work together. Ask the installer to specify the full build-up before buying the materials.
Lay, check and joint
Check the laying pattern, joints, levels and drainage as work progresses. Use tools and methods appropriate for the product. The jointing material must suit the system; the presence of joints does not itself guarantee a weed-free patio. Choose edging and accessories alongside the paving.
