Garden water features: stone, setting and practical planning
A water feature should fit the garden and remain accessible for cleaning. Turn photographic inspiration into a technical plan for your own site.
Three different settings
A rectangular basin with pale edging, gravel and a hedge creates a calm composition. A stone water wall makes a stronger focal point; water is not running in the example photograph. An irregular stone trough has a more natural appearance, although its exact stone type cannot be established reliably from the image.
Pump and maintenance access
Select the pump for the flow and head required by the complete system. Leave access to filters, valves and the basin. Consider wind, splashing and noise near seating areas or neighbouring properties.
Safety and winter preparation
Electrical components must be suitable for the environment and professionally installed. Address risks to children and animals. Winter preparation depends on the actual basin, pump and pipework; one instruction cannot cover every arrangement.
