SBN · Understanding and comparing stone
Granite or travertine for your patio?

Compare specific products rather than two material names. Colour, finish, dimensions and maintenance matter just as much as the type of stone.
Two different appearances
Travertine brings warm tones, a varied natural texture and distinctive pores. It works well in gardens with a Mediterranean feel. Granite’s visible crystals and mineral character often suit simple, contemporary layouts.

Match the product to the use
Suitability for a patio or driveway depends on thickness, dimensions, the supporting construction and expected loads. The word granite or travertine alone does not establish that a paving product can carry vehicles.
How hot will it become?
Colour, sunlight and location affect surface temperature. No natural stone remains cool in all conditions. Where possible, compare samples in conditions similar to those on your patio.
Care and overall cost
Granite can also become dirty or stained, while travertine needs cleaning products suitable for limestone. Compare the maintenance required by the actual finishes. For a useful cost comparison, include the same area, appropriate base construction and delivery.
Your next step
- View samples beside your façade and garden furniture.
- Decide how much visual variation and maintenance you are comfortable with.
- Compare complete costs for the same area and scope of work.
