Rust marks on granite: identify the cause before treatment
An orange-brown mark can come from within the stone or from something on its surface. Photograph it and check possible sources before applying a cleaner.
Minerals and external contamination
Some iron-bearing mineral components can cause discolouration. Contact with external metal can leave similar marks. The individual case needs assessment before concluding that the stone is defective.
Check the surroundings
Furniture feet, tools, screws, nails and iron-rich irrigation water can leave traces. Suitable furniture pads and avoiding prolonged contact with rusty objects reduce external risks. The country of extraction does not guarantee the absence of every possible colour change.
Cleaning carefully
Choose a rust remover compatible with the actual stone and test it discreetly first. Do not experiment with aggressive household cleaners. Impregnation can reduce absorption of external dirt but cannot guarantee against discolouration originating inside the stone.
