Fine-grained or coarse-grained granite?

Fine-grained or coarse-grained granite?

Crystal size mainly changes the appearance of granite. It is not, on its own, a ranking of quality or durability.

What the grain means

Granite contains minerals including quartz, feldspars and micas. Their visible crystals developed as magma cooled underground. Formation conditions influenced their size and the rock’s appearance.

Quiet or expressive texture

Fine-grained granite often looks more uniform from a distance. Larger crystals create a more animated pattern. Either can suit a garden, depending on the architecture and the materials around it.

Performance and selection

Composition, porosity, water absorption and tests for the actual variety are more useful than a rule that finer grain is always better. Compare similar finishes from a realistic viewing distance. Decide whether walls and steps should continue the patio’s texture or deliberately contrast with it.

Your next step

  1. View samples from a normal distance.
  2. Compare stones with equivalent finishes.
  3. Choose either continuity or a deliberate contrast between elements.
