Frost-resistant stone for outdoor use: what to check
Choose outdoor stone using information for the actual product. A rock type alone does not establish frost resistance for every variety and finish.
Water and freezing conditions
Water within pores and cracks can place stress on the material as it freezes. Stone properties, saturation and exposure all matter. Ask for documentation relating to the chosen variety and finish rather than relying on a general material description.
The supporting construction
Tested stone still needs suitable support, joints and drainage. Standing water and incompatible layers can affect the performance of the whole surface. Design the build-up for the ground and expected loads.
Frost and de-icing salts are separate questions
A frost-resistance test does not automatically demonstrate resistance to de-icing salts. Winter maintenance must suit the stone and the installation materials. Check the product guidance before applying a treatment.
