Laying stone setts: the base, pattern and joints
A footpath and a driveway place different demands on paving. Setts, base, bedding and joints must form a system suited to the intended loads.
The foundation matters
A well-designed base supports long-term performance. For a driveway, consider the ground and the vehicles expected. A generic depth in centimetres cannot replace a site-specific assessment. Bedding material and thickness also depend on the setts and installation system.
Choosing a pattern
Straight rows give a traditional appearance. Staggered joints add rhythm, herringbone creates a strong interlocking pattern, and irregular layouts highlight natural variation. A pattern used for vehicle traffic must still be part of a suitably designed construction.
Edge restraint and water
Appropriate edging limits sideways movement, especially under vehicle loads. Plan it together with drainage and connections to adjoining surfaces.
Jointing and compaction
The right joint filling and compaction method depend on the stone, finish and construction. The same plate compactor is not suitable for every natural-stone product. SBN offers granite and travertine setts, with sawn, tumbled or sandblasted finishes depending on the product.
