SBN · Understanding and comparing stone
Is travertine frost-resistant? The sample and installation matter

The answer needs evidence for the specific stone and finish. A result for one sample should not be extended to every travertine product.
What happens to water
Water expands by around 9% when it freezes. Pore structure, saturation and the ability to drain moisture all affect performance. Visible porosity alone is not enough to judge a paving product.

Examples of tested materials
The SBN documentation includes Denizli Light travertine and Bergama Grisi granite. Match the report to the material, sample and finish described. It is not a general guarantee for every stone with a similar colour.
The whole paving construction
The base, bedding, joints and drainage must work together. Stone tested for frost still requires correct installation. Check de-icing compatibility separately rather than assuming that frost resistance covers salts too.
Your next step
- Identify the exact product and surface.
- Match it to the sample described in the report.
- Design drainage and all supporting layers together.
