Lava mulch or bark: choosing a material and grading

Lava mulch is mineral, while bark is organic. Choose according to the plants, soil, maintenance and appearance you want.

How the materials change

Bark breaks down and contributes organic matter to the soil, so it needs replenishing. Volcanic rock does not decompose in the same way and retains its structure for longer. It can suit a lasting planting scheme without making it maintenance-free.

Moisture and weeds

The porous rock can retain some moisture while water moves through a correctly designed bed. Match the solution to the plants and soil. A sufficient layer reduces light reaching the soil, but seeds can still arrive on the surface. Remove leaves and deposits. A membrane is not an automatic answer for every planted bed.

8–16 mm or 16–32 mm?

The 8–16 mm grading gives a finer appearance between closely spaced plants or on smaller areas. The 16–32 mm grading creates a stronger texture on larger beds and decorative strips. Compare them on site.

Anthracite or reddish brown

Anthracite contrasts with pale travertine and highlights foliage. Reddish brown often complements timber and warm-toned façades. Both are natural materials with visual variation.

Quantity and quotation

Volume in m³ equals area in m² × depth in cm ÷ 100. Converting to tonnes requires the actual product’s bulk density. Specify grading, quantity, packaging, collection or delivery and postcode. Availability, loose loads, bulk bags and transport are confirmed in the quotation.
